The Barber/Stylist course prepares students to pass the California State Board Barbering exam to become a licensed barber. Emphasis will be placed on California State Board requirements, theoretical and technical instruction and practical operations. The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology defines Barbering as “the practice of shaving or trimming the beard, cutting the hair, and giving facial and scalp massages with oils, creams, lotions, or other preparations, either by hand or using mechanical appliances. Barbers are also trained in, shampooing, arranging, dressing, curling, waving, chemical waving, hair relaxing, or dyeing the hair or applying hair tonics, and in applying cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, powders, oils, clays or lotions to the scalp, face, or neck.”

The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) required that individuals possess a level of education equivalent to 10th grade. 
Candidates are required to demonstrate a 10th grade level of reading comprehension in English.
